GN 02402: Direct Deposit - Title II and Title XVI

A. Title II beneficiary living abroad requests direct deposit to a United States FI

Title II beneficiaries residing outside the United States can request direct deposit to a U.S. Financial Institution (FI).

If you receive this type of request, follow the same procedures used for beneficiaries residing within the United States.

These sections provide information on direct deposit enrollment.

B. Title XVI recipient leaves the United States while requesting direct deposit

Use these instructions if a Title XVI recipient requests direct deposit to a United States FI while residing outside the area of the 50 States, District of Columbia, or Northern Mariana Islands.

Is the recipient the blind or disabled child of a member of the United States armed forces overseas?

If yes, go to step 2.

If no, go to step 3.

NOTE: For more information on blind or disabled children of military personnel stationed overseas, see SI 00501.415.

If the child remains eligible, process the request for direct deposit to an FI in the United States before changing jurisdiction to the FO in Cumberland, MD.

Is the recipient a student following an approved course of study abroad while meeting all eligibility factors?

If yes, process the request for direct deposit to the United States FI.

If no, go to step 4.

NOTE: For more information on eligibility factors for students abroad, see SI 00501.411.

The recipient is not eligible for SSI while residing outside the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Mariana Islands.

Take no action on the direct deposit request until the recipient is again eligible after returning to the area.
